A USPS City Carrier Assistant (often shortened to CCA) is a non-career-track, entry-level position as a letter carrier.
CCAs include mail carriers, postal workers with a route, and those delivering packages and other items. CCAs are not required to live locally.

What Are The Requirements For City Carrier Assistants?
Applicants for the City Carrier Assistant position must be at least 18 years of age. They must also have a high school diploma or an equivalent. They must also be citizens of the United States or have permanent residence.
In addition, a visa will only be granted to those who show that they have sufficient funds to pay for their own food, lodging and transportation for up to seven days.
All applicants must take the U.S. Postal Service Postal Exam 474. This exam tests applicants’ reading and sorting abilities. There is also a physical part of the exam that measures if the applicant is suitable for the job.
If a position requires driving, you must have a valid driver’s license. If you don’t have a license, you must successfully pass a driving test and show a clean driving record.
How Much Do USPS City Carrier Assistants Make?
You can expect to earn approximately $19 per hour at the City Carrier position.
This is a good job in the travel and tourism industry, however, the yearly salary ranges from $27,211 to $60,523 per year.
In order to make sure that their CCAs feel like they’re getting paid fairly, CCAs are guaranteed a minimum of $7 per hour, even if it is overtime. CCAs also get paid for hours worked above 40 in a week, even if they’re not paid for those hours.
The CA’s and their support staff are paid double time for all work over 10 hours in a service day or over 56 hours in a service week.
Do City Carrier Assistants Get Any Benefits?
The main benefits of CCAs are paid leave and health benefits, as well as access to career City Carrier positions. They also get various other benefits, including job protection (meaning that they are guaranteed a job until retirement and even if their company goes bankrupt, the firm is required to give them a job as a City Carrier for their entire service) as well as preferential access to new positions (if someone is leaving or retiring, CCAs can get priority interview for available positions).

For example, it’s impossible to give an exact answer. Actual hours worked will depend on each post office, staffing, mail volume, or weather conditions, just to name a few.
At a minimum, CCA workers are guaranteed at least four hours of work anytime they are scheduled and report to work. But most CCA workers work 40 hours per week, if not more.
Some CCAs work up to 10.5 hours a day or more. However, per federal policy, USPS may ask a CCA to work up to 11.5 hours in a single workday. The Postal Service has stated that it wants employees to work a maximum of 12 hours in a day.

In the past, the USPS has been known to work 7 days per week. Some have reported getting caught up between 6 days of paid work and getting paid for a seventh day.
How Many Days Can A City Carrier Assistant Take Off?
Each CCAs have one day off a week.
Some CCAs may be entitled to receive more time off for different reasons, such as working in a critical position, a special event in your work life, or being in a leadership role.

Is City Carrier Assistant A Permanent Job?
The position is expected to be full-time and permanent. The position is expected to be for a term of 360 days where the employee will be hired again at 5 days after the termination of the 360 days. The city carrier assistant is expected to have regular work schedule which is to work a 40 hours per week.
While it does not provide a permanent position as far as the city carrier is concerned it does provide a career path to a permanent position.
If and when a permanent position opens up, the most senior CCA at a given branch is first in line for the promotion.
An individual is permitted 2 promotions to the next level.

Is Being A City Carrier Assistant Worth It?
You might think that a CCA is a good job. It all depends on how you look at it.
If you want to talk about the online forums, most CCAs are unhappy with their jobs, and many of them claim to be unhappy.
Many participants have noted that this role is challenging because it lacks training, supervision, and management.
One of the reasons why this is a bad job is because it is hard to get into. When I first applied, I got accepted and then rescinded, and I have not been able to get back in since.
