Aldi sells a lot of cheap groceries and other goods with a low price. It started in Germany and has now some 10,000 stores in the world.

Aldi is one of the best discount supermarkets out there. However, there are other discount supermarkets too. But if you would like to learn more, just keep on reading!

Aldi Competitors In 2022

The competitive landscape of grocery stores is changing as stores are increasingly offering private-label goods that are made with high-quality ingredients at low cost. Supermarkets are able to offer higher-quality products at lower prices compared to other retailers.

Are you curious what other types of grocery stores there are? And, how much money they make? Here is all the information you need!

1. Lidl

Lidl will be the one who is the biggest competitor to Aldi because it was also founded by the same family and it offers cheaper stuff for people.

Aldi is currently opening stores in the United States.

This was the largest grocery store in Europe, and it has more stores than Aldi, and more than 30% of its product is sold in the U.S.

I used Lidl for my trip to USA. You can find almost everything that you need in this store. For example, there is a good variety of grocery items such as rice, pasta, meat, dried vegetables, and spices. This is enough for a normal family living in North America.

2. Walmart

Walmart is one of the top competitors to Aldi due to its grocery and similar product assortment, as well as its low prices.

That’s a little bit more expensive. However, Walmart is a little cheaper overall. So if you are on a tight budget, Aldi is more likely to save you money.

With more than 10,000 stores across the world and $559 billion in sales for 2020, Walmart stays at the top of the worldwide retail chain.

3. Amazon

Amazon is a competitor to Aldi because they have more than 175 fulfillment centers across the world and are used to deal with consumer goods and food products.

While the difference with Aldi is you can shop for household food items from various locations, the prices will be more expensive than Aldi.

It is hard to think about Amazon in a non-market sense. But, it is easy to think of Amazon as an e-commerce company because they sell every kind of item imaginable.

4. Dollar Tree

Dollar Tree is a bargain store that competes with Aldi which is a German super market that costs more than the Dollar Tree.

Dollar Tree is great for a last minute shopping stop. Also, like Aldi, Dollar Tree offers a wide selection of products, including items you might not find at other stores.

This company specializes in the extreme value retail store. The company has more than 15,000 stores in the united states.

5. SuperValue

SuperValue is considered one of the top competitors to Aldi because of the extremely low prices.

In your last example, there are no longer any countries or their capital cities at the end, so we omit them.

It has a very wide array of items and is a great choice for anyone that needs cheap, quality groceries.

In 2018, SuperValue grossed $14.16 billion, which was the same as their revenue in 2017.

6. Whole Foods

Whole Foods has over 500 stores throughout the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. It’s one of the best grocery chains in the world.

I wanted to take this opportunity to respond to recent misinformation about Whole Foods Market and our company, as well as a broader concern about corporate responsibility.

That could be true, but Aldi has products from France, so the prices of the products are more expensive than Whole Foods.

7. Costco

Costco is one of the largest wholesale clubs in the United States. It sells items they sell in bulk such as food, pharmaceuticals and household supplies.

Costco offers shoppers various products, such as electronics, groceries, fresh foods, frozen foods, clothing, pet supplies, and many other products you won’t find at Aldi.

Costco is also a members-only club with over 800 warehouses worldwide and revenue has hit over $122 billion.

8. Target

You can’t buy groceries at Aldi or another low-cost supermarket chain.

Target could be a great choice, considering it’s cheaper than some grocery chains and can be a great choice for those who want to stock up.

The store features more than just groceries and electronics, it also features household goods, electronics, furniture, pet supplies, lawn and garden items, and small appliances. It also hosts a large selection of shoes and fashion apparel such as dresses, skirts, shorts, jeans, jackets, blouses and shirts.

Also, Target’s revenue in 2020 was more than $91 billion at more than more than 1,800 stores throughout the United States and internationally.

9. Asda (England)

Asda is one of the top supermarkets in Great Britain. It has a large selection of goods like groceries, household items, and music. It’s also known for their low prices.

currently, Amazon has 633 asda stores in england. Additionally, the company has increased sales over the past year to have a 2020 revenue of 27 billion.

10. Safeway

While Safeway is not known as a cheap supermarket, its pricing model of “value, convenience, health, and sustainability” makes it a popular choice by consumers.

A majority of the company’s revenue is generated via the Albertsons supermarket chain, as evidenced by the company’s 2020 revenue of $62 billion.

11. Kroger

Kroger is a big company. It sells lots of food all over the United States. So it’s a direct competitor to Aldi for quality food at cheap prices.

Kroger has many generic brands, and its prices are generally comparable to the Aldi brand.

They also have a higher quality and more affordable private selection of products.

As a matter of fact, if Kroger were to expand its business of selling fresh produce and prepared foods to other retailers, it could actually become a threat to other competitors like Whole Foods Market.

12. Giant Eagle

There are different types of competition. Aldi is a retailer which competes with Giant Eagle in price.

However, Giant Eagle’s prices are much lower. They also offer a good variety of products at all of their locations.

The revenues of Giant Eagle was $9.7 billion in 2020 and more than 460 stores were located in the United States.

13. Dollar General

You could go to Dollar General and buy all sorts of things for as little or as much money as you’d expect to pay for them at a traditional grocery store.

Dollar General is a well-stocked general store which carries all kinds of household items and necessities.

Also, with more than 14,000 stores and sales approaching $27.754 billion, it’s an exceptionally low-cost store with many items to choose from at insanely high prices!

14. Morrisons (England)

It’s a great supermarket chain to bring to Europe when people don’t have many choices regarding what they want to buy. You can also find Morrisons at the Aldi stores in Canada.

However, the quality of products is better at Morrisons than Aldi, with very similar prices, and it’s known for having fresh foods.

The two sentences have similar meanings, but the latter sounds more natural to me. It sounds much more natural to my ear because I read it in a context where the verb ‘to know’ is used.

Morrisons is the second largest supermarket chain in the United Kingdom, and it has more than 2,000 stores, allowing it to make 16 billion British Pounds last fiscal year.

15. IGA (Australia)

Independent grocers of Australia and Aldi are one of the leading competition because they are the biggest grocery store chain in Australia. IGA is only one of the leading competitor to Aldi because most of the time Aldi is the favorite of the most of the Australian grocery stores.

IGA Black and Gold is the store brand that is similar to Aldi in quality but can be cheaper than Aldi. There are more products available at IGA than at Aldi. I have also written a similar article about some of the IGA benefits.

The sales of meat and food produce grew by more than 13 percent. And the sales of the major supermarket retailers exceeded $6.15 billion, a new record.

16. Kaufland

Kaufland is a direct competitor of Aldi that was founded in Germany before expanding to more European countries such as Romania, Slovakia, and Poland.

Lidl is owned by Schwarz Group, which is a sister company to Kaufland and allows Kaufland to attract more customers and bring in more sales.

Kaufland sells around 1,400 stores in Europe and makes more than 25.5 billion euros in revenue for 2020.

17. Woolworths

The website of Woolworths lists its Australian stores here.

The other big retailer in the space is Aldi, they are in the same range as Tesco but its mainly the private brands that I see people buying.

I like that you mention a lot of these generic brand names. It is an important aspect to consider when grocery shopping. It gives an indication of what type of food is produced by the company and provides a good choice of options if I want to make something like a pizza instead of buy one.

18. Coles

Crows is one of the biggest competitors to Coles. With that, this supermarket had more than 300 locations throughout Australia, with revenue of 14.72 billion Australian dollars in 2020.

Coles Extra Special Extra Strength, Coles Extra Strength, Coles Standard Strength, Coles Extra Strength and Coles Extra Strength Capsules, Coles Extra Strength, Coles Standard Strength, Coles Standard, Coles Extra Strength, and Coles Extra Strength Capsules.

Coles is a popular Australian company that sells grocery items, household products, and services to the Australian public.

19. Tesco

Tesco was one of the biggest retailers in the world and it was a direct competitor to Aldi.

Tesco is the first grocery store that has a pharmacy which includes hair products, beauty products, perfumes, deodorants and the likes.

Tesco is one of the largest retail chains in the UK, and has more than 4,600 stores worldwide. Its revenues in 2020 were 53 billion British pounds.

20. NettoMarken-Discount

The major difference between NettoMarken-Discount and Aldi is that NettoMarken-Discount is a German company and Aldi is an international chain of supermarkets.

NettoMarken-Discount is cheap for everything you’ll find here. If you’re interested in healthy food, you can find it all here.

21. The Sailing Group (Europe)

Sailing Group has stores in Denmark and Germany. So, it’s a direct competition for Aldi, due to the strong brands that it has. It’s also worth mentioning that the Swedish stores are not owned by the Sailing Group.

The Sailing Group is a competitor to Aldi and offers supermarkets, coffee shops, department stores, and restaurants.

The order for comparison may be changed by a simple swap.

For The Sailing Group, the key to success will be the ability to stay on top of the changing market and to continually invest in staff and technology.

22. The Schwarz Group

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving on which the retailers hope to draw consumers into their stores with deep discounts and special deals.

In a press release issued last month, Lidl claimed that the merger would save them money on staff and distribution costs, because it would create economies of scale.

After the price wars started, Aldi created a similar concept of cheaper brand which is just as affordable as the generic brands, and has also got the support of the parent company. There are two types of stores. One is the normal store and the other is the ‘store within a store’ where they have various different brands selling at a cheaper price.

23. Sainsbury’s (United Kingdom)

Sainsbury’s is the second biggest grocery store chain found in the United Kingdom. Also, it’s a huge competitor to Aldi and provide customers with better quality products for lower prices.

Additionally, Sainsbury’s operates 44 stores and has various customer services, including delivery, and its website is used to order products. However, Sainsbury’s is known for exceptional customer service.

While Sainsbury’s continues to make profit for the foreseeable future, it’s going to need to invest a lot more capital and personnel resources before it starts growing.

Conclusion

Aldi is a big competitor of other supermarkets, including Morrisons, Sainsbury, Coles, Tesco, Woolworths, IGA, Safeway, and Supervalue.

Additionally, Walmart, Target, Costco, and Kroger that operate thousands of stores worldwide are competing against small-box retail and grocery stores like Aldi that operate in a small number of stores.

A large variety of products is to be found at Aldi while at NettoMarken-Discount, products are often sold on sale at a reasonable price.

Even though Aldi is still a good quality store where you can find meager prices on some of the most common household and grocery items, it is still not the best deal around.
