How Long Does USPS Mail Forwarding Last?
USPS has several different mail forwarding options available to you.
In case you have to move and want to change your address without having to make another trip out of the country, you can set up a temporary forwarding address.
When you select this option, USPS will forward your mail to a new address for up to 6 months, even if your delivery has already started.
If you had a vacation home in Florida and you are planning to have a different home in Paris, you would choose this option. In the U.S., there are also permanent change of address forms, which you would fill out while your old address was still active so that you could receive mail there, even if you’ve moved or changed jobs.
When you select this option, USPS will forward your mail for up to 1 year for a fee.
If you select a duration of less than 30 days, FedEx Priority Mail Express Service will continue to be available for that period of time. If you select a period of 30 days or longer, FedEx Priority Mail Service will not be available for that period of time.
Publications such as magazines or newspapers will only be forwarded for 60 days.
What Happens When USPS Mail Forwarding Expires?
During the temporary mail forward period, your mail will be forwarded to the original mailing address which we have on file for you.
To avoid this, you can set up a return receipt (if the recipient chooses to do so). With return receipt, you send the mail, and your recipient sends you a note letting you know the mail has been received. That way you know the mail went through without any problems.
After you change your address this way, USPS will attach a sticker on the mailpiece, listing your new address (provided you’ve filed one) before returning it to the sender.
Mail that’s sent to your old address more than 19 months after the mail forwarding start date will be returned to the sender with the endorsement “Returned to Sender, Authorized Forwarding Time Expired.”
You cannot forward your mail after the authorized forwarding time expires.
Can I Extend My USPS Forwarding?
Temporary mail forwards can be extended for up to 1 year and this can be done as many times as needed.
You can add additional forwarding destinations by creating a new package.

The cost of Extended Mail Forwarding depends on how long you will have your mail forwarded and the distance it will be forwarded to.
