How Does the Hickey Appear?

The hickey appears when the vessels and capillaries present below the skin burst. You can get rid of your hickey by using ice, alcohol, and even a massage.

A hickey is an injury caused by vigorous sucking of the skin, turning into a bruise. In short, your partner has tried to suck you in, and this inevitably left traces.

In reality, everything happens under the skin, with a rupture of the blood vessels that will form a visible blood clot outside the epidermis.

This thin pocket, filled with blood, will then resorb because it would need oxygen to form a crust. Then, the clot will turn blue and finally brown before disappearing permanently.

Some hickeys can last more than a week and become embarrassing around people you don’t want to tell all the intimacy of your romantic relationships.

Top 8 Treatments to remove a Hickey

A hickey is a fruit of an exaggerated, passionate, and desired kiss planted on your neck. Some cover their necks with a turtleneck or a scarf to hide them.

Although it takes a while to make it disappear completely, these tips will be helpful.

Apply Ice over Your Hickey

If you treat your hickey right away, the ice will be enough to attenuate and accelerate its disappearance.

Take ice cubes and wrap them inside a cloth or plastic wrap. You can also use an ice bag available at any local medical store.

Place the ice wrap on your hickey and hold it for 10 minutes. After taking a 2-minute break, continue the process. You can do this treatment 2-4 times while letting your skin rest between the process.

Massage with Alcohol

By using alcohol and acting quickly, you have every chance of removing your hickey with ease. For this, take a piece of cotton and soak it with alcohol. Then, dab the hickey and its outline with it.

Massage for a few minutes to circulate blood under the skin and tone down the mark. If you feel like your skin is dry where you acted, apply a moisturizer to soothe and soften it.

Do it 5 times a day, and you’ll notice the disappearance after the third or fourth round.

Use Heat to Make it Fade

In case the hickey is still present after 2 days, you can use the heat to make it disappear. By heating the affected area, you will dilate the blood vessels and improve blood circulation.

This will have the effect of fading it and making it less visible.

Take a washcloth, soak it in hot water, and then apply it to the hickey. Hold the cloth with pressure for about fifteen minutes. If your hickey is more than a week old, this technique will not work.

The Coin Therapy

This method works if the hickey forms a slight bulge on the surface of the skin. This method involves spreading the bulge out to make it go away faster.

You have to stretch the skin on either side of the hickey so that it’s properly laid flat.

Take a coin and gently scratch the hickey by going back and forth. By insisting a little pressure on the bloodstain, you can thin it, making it fade faster.

Toothbrush Cure

This method is close to the previous one, but we will use another utensil – the toothbrush. Make sure to choose a flexible brush to avoid irritation.

Rub the hickey vigorously with a brush, in circular movement first and then from the center to the outside, to help the blood flow to evacuate.

Do not follow this method for more than a minute; otherwise, you will hurt yourself and make the problem worse. Finally, apply a hot or cold towel for about ten minutes to soothe your skin.

Gentle Massage

Here, the treatment involves massaging the skin firmly to dilute the hickey by helping the blood disperse and then disappear.

Before proceeding with the massage, take a towel moistened with warm water and heat the area of the hickey.

When the skin is warm, remove the towel and massage using fingers, going from the center of the hickey to the outside.

This will spread the blood clot and weaken it to eliminate it finally. By performing this massage several times a day, your hickey will fade away quickly.

Banana Peels

If you are looking for a natural way, buy bananas and use their peels to remove your hickey. Thanks to its soothing and refreshing properties, the banana peels will help you mitigate your unsightly hickey.

However, you must cut a piece of the banana peel in the size of the area to be treated.

After you have the required size, apply the peel to the hickey for at least 20 minutes. You can also place a hot compress on top of it so that it can hold more easily.

Repeat the operation at least four times a day to obtain a conclusive result.

Toothpaste and Peppermint Oil

Both of these ingredients have the power to diffuse a hickey under the skin. Apply the toothpaste directly to the skin where the hickey is located and massage lightly to make it penetrate.

You can also use peppermint essential oil blended with a neutral oil to not burn and irritate your skin.

Use 1 drop of mint for 4 drops of oil, and massage the hickey gently to attenuate it. This method should not be carried out more than thrice a day.

Excessiveness can cause red plaque due to the potency of toothpaste or mint oil.
