Employees of the United States Postal Service work hard and their money is stolen. Maybe the reason they work so hard is because they know they’re going to get robbed.

In a country as diverse as the United States, it can be difficult to get a true sense of the reality of life for a specific group of people. One good way to do that is to get a perspective from within the group itself, and that’s just what we did! This project gave us the opportunity to interview a local postal worker and find out about their experiences.

Do USPS Employees Get Discounts?

U.S. Postal Service employees (or PAS employees. Postal Area Shippers) in the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands don’t receive discounts on stamps, postage, or other Post Office-related services in 2022. However, they do receive an excellent benefits package, including competitive wages and healthcare, as well as any number of discounts on mobile phone packages, gyms, and even universities.

What Are the Perks of Working for USPS?

There were a lot of perks, starting with the competitive salaries.

Most postal workers can expect to earn at least $25,000 a year after tax and in addition to the benefits package that includes: health, dental and vision insurance, an unmatchable retirement, life insurance and other benefits.

A personal accident policy is a policy that you can have if you’re going to go to a job that might be considered hazardous. The idea is that if you have a workplace accident, they will pay for medical expenses and lost wages.

It is the Post Office which is mostly the sole supplier of mail, and therefore it will have major control over the costs of delivering mail (and other services such as parcel delivery).

If you leave your employer before retirement, you can keep your old company match. If you later join another company and later start drawing benefits, you can keep that money.

Full-time employees are allowed to get 13 days of vacation leave in their first three years, followed by 20 days, and then 26 days after 15 years of service.

These are very desirable options to get a lot of vacation time.

The following holidays shall be observed as if they were Federal Holidays: New Year’s Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and others..

The only retirement benefit is a pension. When the US Post Offices employees retired, they only received a pension; neither health nor disability coverage.

USPS employees can also receive discounts through commercial programs (e.g., credit cards & loyalty programs), as well through individual business deals.

The US Postal Service is partnering with online universities to give people the option of being able to learn remotely from a classroom. This was announced in 2019 in a press conference.

The postal service offers discounts like 20 percent off tuition, to these schools.

Do Postal Workers Get Discounts On Shipping?

Employees could be granted discounts by applying for them on their own.

But, my fellow Americans, in case you haven’t heard, there is a new executive order, which prohibits the president from exempting any class of people, including American citizens.

Do USPS Employees Get Discounts On Rental Cars?

U.S. Postal employees are allowed to have up to 25 percent off of rentals from Avis, Hertz, and Budget.

Rental car companies are also offering discounts to individuals who are part of the postal union.

I also heard a big discount on hotels for hotel employees and their families. Hotels.com/Expedia.com also offers discounts for travel to and from the airport.

Does USPS Pay for Gym Memberships?

USPS employees don’t get free gym membership, but they are able to get discounts to 24 Hour Fitness.

This membership includes an initial month-to-month fee of $29.99 and a monthly fee of $35.99 for the All-Club Sport level.

The first option is $44.99 per month for Super, and the second option is $83.99 per month for Ultra.

Different tiers for employees who live in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Hawaii, and California are also available.

By becoming part of the Guild, you are gaining access to the Guild Forums (discussion forums, bug reporting forums, etc), an active chat area, an e-mail address, and the ability to upload art and create a profile with your fellow member’s art.

Does USPS Pay for College?

The United States Postal Service does not pay for college, but they are permitted to access a tuition discount for dozens of online universities.

The reason why Purdue University Global chose to charge $250,000 is because of the quality of the school.

When it comes to the government, employees of the Post Office can purchase college tuition at 20 percent off.

Additionally, tuition may be significantly reduced for graduate degree programs and law programs at Concord Law School.

At DeVry University, employees and their immediate families can access 25 percent off tuition, plus waive the application fee and transfer credits. So get that application in!

How Long Do You Have to Work for USPS to Get a Pension?

A postal worker requires five years of civilian service to qualify for the federal retirement fund. The time clock must be started at least 20 years before retirement.

After retirement, the pension is typically fixed and the only factor determining the amount is the pension benefit formula (that is, how long they worked for US Mail) and the normal cost-of-living adjustments that will have taken place by the time they retire. For example, the formula for a person who retired in 2010 and worked for 12 years will have retired with more than the average employee but less than the maximum benefit.

For example, a person who retired in 2020 with 25 years of service [would] see between $1,308 and $1,335 in annual payments.

Can You Retire From USPS After 20 Years?

You can retire from the postal service after 20 years if you are at least 60 years old and choose the Optional retirement. If you choose Early Out retirement, you can retire at age 50.

Conclusion

USPS employees don’t have to worry about health insurance. The Postal Service’s self-insurance program is quite robust. Not only do USPS employees receive free health care, but the Postal Service is also self-insured, so any services or treatments covered under the Postal Service’s healthcare plan are covered for free as well.

The Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation, which with the Social Security System makes the Federal Government a highly desirable place to retire from, too.
