You’ll be very happy to know that it’s possible to get booze delivered to your door. While not all delivery services are open to the delivery of certain age-gated substances, there are some websites and applications that will happily deliver alcoholic beverages to you. And it’s completely legal, too!
If you’ve ever been in a situation where you’re scrambling to get alcohol into your home, whether for a party, as a part of your regular errands, or just for relaxation on a night in alone, you’ve probably wondered whether or not is was possible for you to get booze delivered to you.
After all, it’d be nicer than having to head out to the “liquor store near me” you’re searching for, especially in the case where you would just rather not leave your home again. But it could also be incredibly useful if you’re looking for a “liquor store near me” while you’re in a new area, whether that’s across town or a different city entirely.
But there has to be some kind of downside to this, right? How is something like this legal? And are there any other positive aspects to getting your alcohol delivered that you might not have considered? Is this really more convenient than heading to the “liquor store near me” yourself?
You’ll Need a Legal Form of Identification
While this might have been obvious to some people, it’s still a pretty good idea to remember that you’ll need to prove you’re 21 years of age or older in order to actually receive your booze. That means that, if you don’t have a form of legal identification, this isn’t going to be any less difficult than hitting up the “liquor store near me” and hoping you’ll be able to trick the cashier.
Some applications and services that are happy to deliver your alcohol to you will actually require you to submit pictures of your legal ID before you can even place your order with them. And if that particular website doesn’t have that requirement, they will require you to show the delivery person that you are at least 21 years old before they will hand over your purchase.
This is probably one of the bigger hurdles that these delivery companies need to put into place in order to run legally, as that allows them to protect their customers and their own legal interests. So if you’re underage, you won’t be able to use one of these websites or services to get booze for yourself, as that simply won’t be permitted.
In other words, it will be just as difficult for an underage drinker to get alcoholic beverages in this way as it would be if they went to that “liquor store near me” they would have been trying to purchase from otherwise.
Be Present for Pick Up
You’ll also need to be physically at the delivery location in order to receive your order, largely for the aforementioned reasons mentioned in the previous section. This is also a kind of protection for the company, as it ensures that no one who is underage will get the alcohol because of their actions.
That means that contactless delivery won’t necessarily be an option, as you’ll need to get to the door. But at least you won’t need to physically leave your home in order to receive your favorite alcoholic beverages, which still makes this pretty convenient.
In the case that you are not physically able to receive your order, generally there is still a requirement that someone who is of legal age is able to interact with delivery personnel. That means if you want to get your alcohol delivered to a business location and the order is intercepted by a receptionist who is at least 21 years old, that works too.
No Cash, Unfortunately
While the idea of being able to pay in cash would be ideal for some people trying to use an alcohol delivery service, this just isn’t possible for many websites or applications. That doesn’t mean that you can’t offer your delivery person some sort of cash tip, it just means that you won’t be able to pay for your order in cash.
This makes it, as you can imagine, significantly more simple for the company and the delivery personnel to prioritize their time correctly, as they will only need to spend time on orders that have already completed payment. Generally, there’s just less risk involved for the company that way.
Don’t Deliver to a P.O. Box
In general, these delivery services will not be open to sending your order to a post office box. Again, this has to do with some of the legal restrictions they have to deal with in terms of ensuring the age-gated substance doesn’t get into underage hands.
Additionally, P.O. boxes can also be limited in space, and requesting for the post office to hold onto larger packages may incur extra fees or complications for the staff. Regardless, it’s just best to get your order sent to your physical business or personal location.
