It offers customers the ability to get internet through a cable-like connection instead of over a cellular connection. Verizon uses Verizon FIOS’s internet service as their major internet service in parts of the US.

If you’ve been reading what I’m writing in our Verizon FIOS review, then you know that Verizon FIOS offers many different features and services. In this post, I’ll explain the basics of these things and how they work.

If you’re looking to use Verizon FIOS, it is a good idea to know what services are included with the service.

What is FIOS and How Does It Work?

Fiber optic lines provide faster internet speeds than traditional cable lines by sending data through glass fibers, instead of copper wires.

For instance, FIOS doesn’t use the local power lines to transmit the internet signals. Instead they use fiber optic cables that run throughout neighborhoods.

The fiber-optic lines run directly from the node to your home, not through the node like some other fiber-optic providers. This is one major factor, but not the only reason why Verizon FIOS is the fastest of all.

Is FIOS Free with Verizon?

The Verizon FIOS service is not free, as it is a separate service offered by the company. Therefore, if you have FIOS, you’ll have to pay for it each month.

You will get a $12 subscription fee for each additional box, which is more than other service like Netflix, but is less than other companies that cost $15 a month for additional boxes.

Verizon is $39.99 per month for the slower 200Mbps connection, and for the faster Gigabit connection costs $89.99.

However, Verizon FIOS does have an availability checker that allows you to see if your area is covered by FIOS, since not all cities in the available states have FIOS as an option, but you can always contact your local FIOS provider directly to determine your own FIOS availability and whether or not you are eligible for the program.

How Long Does It Take to Get Verizon FIOS Installed?

If you have chosen Verizon FIOS to be installed in your home, you can expect that the installation will take at least 6 hours.

Make sure you have your FIOS equipment set up and plugged in. Make sure you do this before the technician arrives.
Make sure the power is on for your FIOS equipment (check the power meter on the equipment if you have one).
Make sure your equipment is turned on.

In most cases, the installation takes around 4 or 5 hours, although how long it takes depends on your setup and what services you’re ordering through FIOS.

What Do You Need for FIOS?

Once you’re connected to your FiOS Internet provider, you need to choose a password for your account. The provider will send you a PIN code, your username, and your password to activate your account.

Verizon will still be installing cables, so you will still be getting the FIOS service. The technician may be installing a wireless internet device to improve the connection to your home. This wireless router will allow internet to come through your home even as you are away from home.

Can I Buy a Router Instead of Renting From Verizon?

Verizon Fios works on your existing FIOS router. If you have a router that is compatible with FIOS, you can use it to access the Fiber Optics Network of Verizon.

The only way you’ll get Verizon support for an Unlocked Verizon phone is if you buy a Verizon router and activate it through the Verizon network.

Unfortunately, the router can only be rented from your local Verizon store, so you’d be paying a monthly fee for the router.

If you decide to rent this router, it’ll cost you about $15 a month, but you can purchase an IPV6 router initially from Verizon for $299, which may be the better option in the long run.
