The revelation of the existence of a second uranium enrichment facility in Iran on Friday, prompting Middle East Analyst Jim Phillips of The Heritage Foundation to proclaim that Iran is lying about it’s nuclear aspirations and should not be trusted by the rest of the world.
“This is one more piece of evidence that shows that Iran cannot be trusted…it continues to harbor nuclear ambitions which threaten many states, including the United States.”
Phillips said that because Iran is required to announce any nuclear sites prior to beginning construction on them, it is in violation of a 1968 nuclear non-proliferation treaty signed by 189 countries to limit the spread of nuclear weapons.
Phillips also said that the U.S. should not expect any support from Russia and China on this issue of forcing Iran to comply.
“Russia and China have historically acted as Iran’s lawyers at the UN security council..it’s not clear that their policies will change,” Phillips said.
