Does immigration equal slavery? Expert thinks so

Mark Krikorian, the executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, compares the economic effects of immigration to growth in the south due to slavery. Krikorian says that the expansion of slavery improved the quality of life for native born Americans in the south, and parallels can be drawn to current immigration issues. (0:41)

United States should not lecture other countries on human trafficking

U.S Ambassador Mark Lagon said today that the United States should not lecture other countries on human trafficking and how things should be done to end it. Lagon discusses human trafficking reports that the United States has done annually as well as the annual international trafficking and persons report, which give numbers and an estimate on how each country is doing to combat human trafficking. U.S. Ambassador urges all countries to work together to end trafficking

Ambassador Mark P. Lagon, director of the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons at the U.S State Department discusses the child soldier abuses in the 30 odd countries, today. Ambassador says human trafficking is modern day slavery

At a Congressional Human Rights Caucus Briefing today, Ambassador Mark Lagon, director of the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons at the U.S. State Department, discussed human trafficking from conflict zones in sub-Saharan Africa. UNICEF estimates that conscription of child soldiers affects more than 300,000 children under the age of 18 in more than 30 armed conflicts worldwide.

In December 2007, the United Nations noted that evidence suggests refugee and internally displace person (IDP) camps are often prime recruiting grounds for child soldiers because of the concentration of vulnerable children. Lagon said that human trafficking is modern day slavery. (more…)
