In a hearing today, Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said that the Bush administration has cost the United States “moral authority” in the eyes of the international community. Albright said that while America is still “the world’s mightiest power,” America needs to reestablish respect from abroad.

Albright said that the first thing the next president should do is withdraw troops from Iraq. She said that having troops in Iraq has contributed to a negative view of America globally. Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) disagreed and said “Our work has elevated our reputation.” Albright said a withdrawal would look favorable internationally because the United States can “steer credit to responsible Iraqi leaders.” She emphasized that the military has been brilliant, but the problem in Iraq is political. Albright said that this admistration has had an “overemphasis on military aspects of missions.”

Energy policy has not been addressed by the United States enough, according to Albright. She said that our future energy policies should focus on innovation and finding alternative sources. Albright said that offshore drilling is not a solution. Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.) said that our energy policy is a “vital component of our grand strategy.”

Albright specified the five major issues for the next president would be nuclear non-proliferation, fighting terrorism without creating more terrorists, promoting democracy without forcing it on other nations, the growing gap between the poor and wealthy, and establishing new energy policy. Albright that she hoped that the next president would work closely with Congress and advocate bipartisanship.

“If we let the world know that we’re going after every drop that we can responsibly gather, and let the world know that we are going to be the least reliant country in the world on oil…we would send a ripple throughout the world,” said Senator Voinovich (R-OH) during a telephone conference on energy independence and national security.

“We wouldn’t need to be at the mercy of other people. It wouldn’t impact our foreign policy decisions as it does today.”

Voinovich made the case that the combination of the country’s debt and reliance on foreign oil received from hostile nations has created a security concern that neither presidential candidate has properly addressed.

“The problem that they’re not talking about is that 51 percent of the debt is owned by foreign countries…70 percent of it is being bought by the Chinese, the Japanese, and the OPEC nations.”

Voinovich likened the situation to a business whose competitors have a supply that’s in demand and control of their debt. He said that under those circumstances it was doubtful it would be in business much longer.

House Republicans held a press conference today calling for Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to allow a vote on comprehensive energy reform. Speakers said the Republican strategy would solve America’s energy crisis by developing renewable and alternative fuels, using clean coal and nuclear energy, and increasing the levels of American-produced oil and gas.

Rep. Thad McCotter (R-Mich.) attacked the “do-nothing, don’t-care” Congress via phone, saying Pelosi has allowed Congress to stay on vacation while the energy crisis remains unsolved.
House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) outlined the Republican standpoint on energy, saying that “energy security is in effect national security.” Boehner also said that revenues gained by the US government from increased oil exploration would be used to fund renewable sources of energy. He concluded his statement, asking Pelosi to “give [Congress] a chance to show the American people we can produce what they want.”

Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.) said that by 2030, America’s energy needs will have increased by 30 to 40 percent. He adds that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has discussed the need to increase the US’ nuclear energy supplies by 50% by that time, which the Arizona Senator believes would create 750,000 new jobs. “We cannot stay at home with [this] job undone,” Upton said.

Rep. Bob Latta (R-Ohio) says that once the world sees that United States can reach energy self sustainability, the price of oil will be driven down, much in the way President Bush’s statement regarding offshore drilling has done (:38).

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called global warming and energy policy “the issue of our time” at a press conference where she urged President Bush to relieve high gas prices by opening the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Pelosi said the SPR is 97 percent full, the highest it has ever been, and that Americans deserve access to gasoline purchased with their tax dollars. Pelosi, who made a similar request to Bush ten days ago, added that gas prices would have lowered by now if Bush had acted when she originally asked. Pelosi repeatedly stated that despite having two oil men in the White House, gas prices remain over $4.

Continuing, Pelosi said Bush’s energy policy have caused price spikes and discussed the democratic DRILL (Drill Responsibly In Least Lands) Act, an act that advocates increased developments in energy alternatives and minimal drilling. She noted that calls for off-shore drilling by Republicans will take ten years to enact and only lower prices by $0.02. Pelosi said this route would cause the average family to spend $57,000 on gas in the next decade. She called Bush’s solution to high energy prices a “hoax” and said a majority of Americans agree that increasing the development of alternative energies is a good way to decrease prices while building new jobs.

In reference to increased violence in Afghanistan, Pelosi criticized the White House for initially turning its attention towards Iraq, allowing the situation in Afghanistan to worsen. She said Democrats in Congress demand accountability from the military and the Executive Branch, adding that Bush is now realizing the commitment that is necessary to fight extremism in Afghanistan.

“Democrats in the House and Senate have stood in the way of more American made energy” said House minority leader John Boehner (R-Ohio). “That’s why almost 70% of our oil that we use everyday has to be imported.” Boehner and other top Republicans spoke at a press conference today to accept a petition from American Solutions signed by 1.3 million Americans. Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) says that Reid is a chicken for not supporting a vote on American production of oil offshore. The numbers that the United States has are not positive or up to date, because there has never been a modern day exploration analysis of offshore potential. (1:38)
