Congressman Garrett says lower taxes is a solution

April 9th, 2008 by S. Dawn Jones · 1 Comment

In response to my question ‘in one paragraph, how do you fix the economy?’, Congressman Scott Garrett (R-NJ) says that we weren’t having these problems two years ago, so what are we doing different now? What’s different is that we have a Democratic control of Congress, and stimulus programs that have done no good. What we did in the past that did work was try to have true economic growth. He says he has sponsored the Economic Growth Act which will lower the burdens on business and families, and that is truly the solution to the problem. (1:21)

Gingrich Discusses Fixing America the “Right” Way, Criticizes Obama

March 27th, 2008 by Staff · No Comments

Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and current senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute of Public Policy Research (AEI), gave a speech today focused on the problems America faces domestically and his thoughts about correcting such problems.

Gingrich’s speech was critical of Senator Barack Obama, the Democratic Party, and American culture in general. Gingrich expressed a desire for America’s poor to learn to bring wealth into their communities for themselves, not by doing so with the benefits of government programs.

Gingrich criticized Obama’s plans to improve urban education, even opining, “no one on the left is prepared to rebuild Detroit,” a city the former member of Congress was particularly adamant about rebuilding.

Gingrich’s plan to rebuild America focused primarily upon improving the cultural values that dominate our society today. Also, Gingrich praised former Mayor of New York City Rudy Guliani for his efforts to curtail crime in New York. Gingrich explained that American education must be reformed for our students to be able to compete with Chinese and Indian students.

Obama Campaign Responds to Geraldine Ferraro in a Press Conference Call

March 11th, 2008 by Staff · 3 Comments

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky hosted a press conference call to address recent comments made by Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro (D-NY 9) that “If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position … And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.” Campaign representatives criticized the Clinton campaign for failing to distance itself from the comments and denounce such divisive sentiments. They claimed that campaign leadership comes from the very top, and hold Sen. Clinton responsible for accepting this kind of behavior asking “Is she serious about policing the tone of this campaign?” The whole affair was described as a continuation of the kind of detrimental “tear-each-other-down” politics against which they are striving, said Obama surrogates. Calls were also made for Ferraro to be censured and removed from her positions within the Clinton campaign.

Senate Budget Committee Critiques President’s Budget Proposal

February 5th, 2008 by Staff · No Comments

In a heated exchange, the Senate Budget Committee heard testimony from OMB director Jim Nussle regarding President Bush’s FY2009 Budget Proposal. Chariman Kent Conrad (D-ND) opened the hearing with a poster reading “the debt is the threat” and continued this theme, saying the “debt is going up like a scalded cat,” described the three D’s of President Bush’s legacy as “debt, deficit, and decline,” and called the budget “a debt bomb on the next president.” He made sure to emphasize the difference between the deficit, which is the year-to-year difference between spending and revenue, and the debt, which includes all money owed to Social Security and other lenders.

The consensus was apparent that this budget is unrealistic on a number of levels. A number of social programs would face spending cuts of up to 100%, the DOD would receive less than half of the $193 billion it spent this year in Iraq and Afghanistan.

While each side of the aisle presented different complaints, they were united in opposition to the projected economic outlook if this plan is put into action. The $9 trillion debt is expected to reach $10 trillion; if the stimulus package is enacted, the 2008 deficit is expected to reach $400 billion. Ranking member Judd Gregg (R-NH) criticized the Democrats regarding Pay-Go rules and SCHIP, but gave Nussle the same treatment, criticizing the long-run usefulness of this plan.

Chairman Conrad and Senator Bernard Sanders (I-VT) were some of the most vocal and aggressive when demanding justifications for unrealistically low war spending estimates ($70 billion for 2009) and severe cuts to social programs like LIHEAP which helps low-income families heat their homes. Nussle responded with a question, asking when Congress would pay the war bills for this year.

Medicare and Medicaid was also a topic of long discussion. Nussle claimed the budget aims to limit uncontrolled growth in spending in these areas. The Committee discussed the need for reform in these areas, rather than simple spending cuts.

Senator Lautenberg (D-NJ) focused on the cuts that Amtrak would receive under the President’s plan, remarking on traffic problems across the country.

Senator Menedez (D-NJ) seemed to sum it all up when he declared the proposal “dead on arrival.”
