Millions need new, progressive forms of cancer treatment

Dr. Emil Freireich, an oncologist and cancer researcher, says that millions are in needs of progressive forms of cancer treatment between the hundreds of thousands of cancer patients doomed to die and the growing number of patients whose lives have only been prolonged with current treatment methods. Legislation would improve lives of terminal cancer patients

In an effort to improve the quality of life for terminally ill cancer patients, Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) and Rep. Diane Watson (D-Calif.) held a news conference to introduce the Access, Compassion, Care and Ethics for Seriously Ill Patients Act. The act intends to reform the process of approval for cancer patients seeking alternative and experimental drug treatments. Brownback said that the act will allow the process to be more patient oriented. Watson said that FDA policies appear to shift yearly and that cancer treatment has not improved greatly since the 1990s despite Congressional legislation intended to speed cancer treatment research. Elizabeth Edwards, Lance Armstrong on the hill to discuss cancer and work to be done

There was a full committee hearing this morning on “Cancer: Challenges and Opportunities in the 21st Century” with witnesses that included Elizabeth Edwards, wife of presidential candidate and former Senator John Edwards, in addition to Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France winner and chairman and founder of the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
