Charles Schumer (D-NY) says that “we are saying to the Saudis that ‘if you don’t help us, why should we be helping you?’” He says that the relationship should be a “two-way street,” and that although Saudi Arabia needs U.S. military arms, the U.S. needs Saudi Arabia to “cooperate, and not strangle American consumers.” (0:25)

The Obama campaign held a conference call with former Colorado Governor and Democratic National Committee Chair Roy Romer to announce Romer’s endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-Ill.) presidential campaign. Romer said he will cast his vote at the Democratic National Convention for Obama as the democratic nominee for president.

Today at Talk Radio News Service, members of the staff will be attending the Maria Leavy Breakfast series with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). This morning the Washington Bureau will cover a discussion by the Brookings Institute about the energy challenges the next president will face. Correspondent Dawn Jones will attend an update on ongoing security operations in Iraq. Jay Tamboli, legal affairs correspondent, will be attending a press conference with former Representative Bob Barr, who will discuss his future plans for the 2008 election. White House Correspondent Lovisa Frost will be covering briefings at the White House.
This afternoon Dawn Jones will cover a hearing on the impact of American reconstruction and anti-corruption failures on the U.S. mission in Iraq. The Washington Bureau will cover a discussion with the Brookings Institute entitled, “The Economic and National Security Implications of the U.S.-Columbia Free Trade Agreement.”

Lebanon: “staring into the abyss of another possible war”

Mohamad Bazzi, Council on Foreign Relations fellow on the ground in Beirut, held a media conference call to discuss the events this week in Lebanon. He said that on Saturday Hezbollah was accused of spying on the Lebanese state with a camera on a Beirut airport runway, and also of using a private communication network to communicate with each other through their own infrastructure. He said that on Monday night the Lebanese government held a meeting, and condemned what Hezbollah had done. He said Hezbollah and other opposition parties used a strike planned by labor unions on Wednesday as a vehicle to express their displeasure with the government’s decisions.

Mississippi official asks Congress to waive environmental regulations for Katrina relief

At a Committee on Financial Services subcommittee hearing on implementation of Hurricane Katrina relief funds, Director of the Mississippi State Governor’s Office of Recovery and Renewal Jack Norris asks Congress to “streamline or waive” the “cumbersome” environmental regulations that he says are the “number one impediment” to providing affordable housing for victims. Members of Congress talk about digital TV transition

The House Committee on Small Business Subcommittee on Contracting and Technology held a hearing concerning “The DTV Transition and Small Business: Small Firms Contributing to a Big Change.” Committee members spoke with cable company leaders in small communities to better understand the effect that the transition to digital television will have on their respective societies.
Chairman Bruce Braley (D-IA) focused his questioning on the implications the transition will have on small business, and was assured by panel members such as Jack Dempsey, the President and General Manager of WJHL- TV/ News Channel 11 of Johnson City, TN that the public will be well informed enough to make the transition smooth and affordable.
