UN Influenza chief on strategy to tackle spread of H1N1
David Nabarro, the UN Secretary-General’s UN Chief on Influenza (H1N1), briefed reporters on the latest cases and the global concern about a new strain of influenza — (H1N1). Nabarro said the United Nations system is coming together to address the 1000 new cases–spanning 20 countries across the world. He said many global UN staff were deeply concerned over the health of friends and families.
He also praised Dr. Margaret Chan’s communications with the international community on behalf of the World Health Organization (WHO). Nabarro was sharply criticized by several journalists in the room for not acting swiftly enough to mitigate the spread of H1N1. He was firm in his position that WHO is leading the response for the United Nations system effectively, but the current situation is yet another reminder that viruses do not respect borders.
