Update on the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD)
The General Assembly held a plenary meeting on the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) to discuss progress in implementation and international support; causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development in Africa. NEPAD was designed to address the current challenges facing the African continent. Issues such as the escalating poverty levels, underdevelopment and the continued marginalization of Africa needed a new radical intervention, spearheaded by African leaders, to develop a new vision that would guarantee Africa’s renewal.
The current crises in Sudan, Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo demonstrate the urgent need for international financial assistance for humanitarian programs.
The goal is to place African countries, both individually and collectively, on a path of sustainable growth and development; halt the marginalization of Africa in the globalization process and enhance its full and beneficial integration into the global economy; and accelerate the empowerment of women.
