Clinton holds State of Race Campaign Call
This morning a conference call was held by the Clinton campaign with Geoff Garin, Chief Strategist, Howard Wolfson, Communications Director, and Phil Singer, Deputy Communications Director. The primary reason for the call was to briefly discuss the results of last night’s primaries, but to also discuss the future and the road ahead. The campaign staffers discussed how they are going to move forward to “victory” in November. They also discussed Indiana and the close outcome there, of which they feel good about. They stated that this win represented the first time that Clinton had come behind to achieve a primary victory, adding that she did it with obstacles.
As for the future, Clinton will be campaigning in West Virginia the next few days, as this is a key swing state in which she can prove a democrat can succeed , they say.. The campaign also maintains the position that Florida and Michigan need to be seated at the convention as they are part of the fifty states, and that they are working for this to happen. The campaign also added that they still believe Clinton is a better match up against Senator and Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain than Senator Obama is.
When asked a question about the comments Tim Russert made last night, the campaigns response was that voters control the nominating process, not pundits. The campaign officials also discussed the topic of campaign fundraising stating that Obama did have a better fundraising month than Clinton did, as evidenced by the millions she loaned herself. The Clinton campaign also stressed numerous times through out the call that Clinton’s victory in Indiana yesterday was a come-from-behind victory, trying to steer off sentiments that Obama’s close vote count in the state was in itself a victory.
