Over the past 25 years, the “big bad oil companies” have paid up $2.2 trillion dollars in tax (adjusted for inflation). That is more than three times the profit that they made in the same period.

I am supposing that these protesters were trying to get attention from their senators. Senators do little more than complain and blame Bush and the Republican party.
