News from the United Nations 20.2.08

The United Nations mission in Kosovo reports that the border violence yesterday was a “one time thing,” and that the situation on the ground is now “stable.”
The border crossings near the areas of violence are now re-opened. Though most countries have accepted Kosovo independence, China and Russia have not.

Regarding the situation in Sudan, the Secretary-General is worried that the the humanitarian situation has deteriorated quickly over the past two months. The Mr. Ban is particularly concerned with the bombings that occurred on the 18th and 19th of February in Aro Sharow camp for displaced people. The United Nations is reporting that troops from both the Sudanese government, as well as militia forces are gathering in WestDarfur. The Secretary-General calls for an immediate cessation of violence.

The UN mission in Congo is still greatly concerned with the contunied violence. The United Nations reports that approximately 30 civilians were killed over the weekend.

During a Food and Agriculture meeting in Thailand, the nutritional value of insects will be on the agenda. Certain insects are, apparently, high in protein and have the potential to feed refugees and displaced people around the world.

A discussion climate change prevention will be held at the United Nations on Thursday, 21 February.
