Subcommittee chairman Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) questions John K. Tanner, chief of the Voting Rights section of the Department of Justice during an oversight hearing. Nadler questions Tanner about the proof that motivated Tanner’s decision to overrule an objection made by other Justice Department staff to a Georgia voting law submitted for preclearance. The objecting opinion stated that the Georgia voting statute had potential to be racial discriminatory. Tanner outlines the information he used in his decision to throw out the objection and approve the law through the Department of Justice.
