Rep. Donald Payne (D-NJ-10th) speaks about the connection between Malaria and Poverty at the House hearing on "Malaria Awareness Day: Leveraging Progress for Future Advances."
Payne says that Malaria is a decease of poverty and that 25% of the available income in an average household goes to prevention and treatment of Malaria. This creates a big drain on an already impoverished people. According to the African medical and Research Foundation Malaria costs Africa 12 billion dollars every year. We must fight poverty in Africa and other developing regions of the world. As of 2000, the Millennium developing goals was to have poverty down 50% by 2015. Payne finishes by saying that we are not reaching our goal.(0:56)
