President’s Schedule

The President had his usual briefings this morning and signed a resolution naming the Sergeant Byron W. Norwood Post Office Building. The President will then travel to the Organization of American States to make remarks on CAFTA to an audience that will include members of the Hispanic Alliance for Free Trade. This afternoon the President will have lunch with Vice President Cheney. This evening the President will travel to McLean, Virginia to attend a "Virginians for Jerry Kilgore" dinner and fundraiser at a private residence.

London Bombings

Press Secretary Scott McClellan stated that the President has been informed of Thursday’s bombings in London and that the White House is closely monitoring reports. McClellan said that he did not have anything to add at this time and had no additional information on the scale of the attacks. When asked if today’s incident will cause any action to be taken in the United States, McClellan responded that our mass transit systems remain on high alert since the London bombings of two weeks ago.

Re-evaluation of China’s Currency System

McClellan commented that the administration is very pleased with China’s decision to implement a new currency system. He referred additional questions to the Treasury Department and said that the press corps should wait to hear from Treasury Secretary Snow later in the day.

Karl Rove’s Security Clearance

Helen Thomas asked if Karl Rove still had his security clearance in this White House to see classified documents. McClellan answered, "I have already answered all of those questions about the investigation". Thomas followed up by saying that this was a direct question about Rove’s security clearance status. McClellan did not answer further.

Opposing Judge Roberts

McClellan was asked to comment on conservative columnist Ann Coulter’s recent opposition to Judge John Roberts nomination to the Supreme Court based on his lack of a paper trail and his stance on property rights. McClellan responded that Judge Roberts is highly qualified for a position on the Court and that "we have not been surprised by the support that Judge Roberts has received from people across the spectrum". McClellan said that Roberts will continue meeting with Senators today on Capitol Hill.

President’s Speech at the OAS

McClellan was asked if the President will reference the London bombings or terrorism during his CAFTA speech today at the Organization of American States. McClellan replied that the President is focused on CAFTA but that he may always add to his remarks.
