Sen. Richard G. Lugar (R-IN), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, congratulates the works of Congress and the American people on the attention and focus given to concerns in Africa.

Lugar, in his opening statement at Friday’s hearing, is encouraged by the American interest in Africa. He sees the changing attitudes as a way to increase protection and prosperity of people in Africa and around the world. In an example, he states how a bill passed by Congress in 2004 has now enabled the textile industry to employ tens of thousands of workers. (0:46)
