Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) offers stern words to those pressing for the Supreme Court confirmation hearings of John Roberts to start soon at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.

Posted by Staff on July 27, 2005 |

Leahy, ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, tells the Senate leadership and the White House to "back off" and allow he and Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) to schedule the John Roberts confirmation hearings as they see fit. The committee has been pressured to start the process soon, but, as Leahy says, postponing the hearings until September would have no effect on the timing of the vote. Also, Leahy criticizes White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan for not providing documents pertaining to the Supreme Court nominee. (1:43)
