President’s Schedule
The President had his usual briefings this morning. Later this morning, the President will meet with leaders of the European Union for the United States/European Union Summit. The President will meet briefly with the leaders before a more expanded meeting in the Cabinet room. The President will eat lunch with the European Union leaders and meet with the press upon the completion of the meetings. The meetings will focus on the United States’ support of a strong Europe and the expansion of freedom and democracy. The President is also expected to discuss the European Union’s role in increasing American security.
Bolton Nomination
White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan was asked about the progress of John Bolton’s nomination to be a United Nations ambassador. McClellan responded by saying the nomination is expected to move forward this evening. McClellan said the Bush Administration is encouraging the Senate to either vote Bolton’s nomination up or down. McClellan commented that it is clear the Democratic leadership in the Senate is not interested in the information, but simply in obstruction. He called for Senate Democrats to break from party leadership and continue on with the vote. McClellan stressed that Bolton is interested in reforming the United Nations in order to make it a more effective organization, and that it is best for all parties involved to move forward with the nomination process.
Questions over possible Rehnquist retirement
Press Secretary McClellan dispelled rumors that the Bush Administration plans on announcing the retirement of Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist next week. He said if any announcement were to be made, it would be made by the Chief Justice himself. McClellan added that the Bush Administration is always preparing for the possibility of a vacancy, but no vacancy exists at this time.
Strayhorn for Texas Governor
Press Secretary McClellan was asked to comment on Carole Keeton Strayhorn’s announcement that she will run for Governor of Texas. Strayhorn, the current Comptroller of Texas, is McClellan’s mother. McClellan was asked if he had any plans to leave his current position as White House Press Secretary to help with his mother’s campaign. He responded by saying that he has no plans at the present time to leave his position, but that the President always encourages him to "listen to his mother."
