White House Gaggle
By Ellen Ratner
June 21, 2005
Briefer: Scott McClellan
President’s Schedule:
The President had a phone call with President Musharraf of Pakistan. Among other things they discussed the war on terrorism. He then had his usual round of briefings. He will meet with the Prime Minister of Vietnam and also make remarks at a swearing-in ceremony on economic growth and job creation. He will then host the weekly luncheon of the Republican Senate Policy Committee at the White House. Later in the day he will address the Southern Baptist Convention by satellite where he will focus on strong families, a culture of life and building armies of compassion both at home an abroad. He will also have a visit from former NATO Secretary Robertson. He will be meeting with Republican House members about CAFTA and the Dominican Republic Free Trade agreements.
Vietnam Prime Minister:
The President will visit Vietnam in 2006. Although President Bush addressed human rights in his later meeting with the Prime Minister, McClellan would not address the protesters outside of the White House.
Bolton Nomination:
The White House will continue to urge the Senate to give Bolton an up or down vote. Scott said that the Democratic leadership is not interested in more information because all they want is to keep moving "the goal post". He also said they are only interested in playing politics with the nomination. He said that the ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Senator Rockefeller, and Senator Roberts moved forward on a "reasonable compromise". He said, "we will continue to talk to those who are interested in moving the nomination forward". He said that it "prevents us from moving other agenda items forward" such as the energy bill.
Saddam’s Interrogation:
Asked about reports of delays with Saddam, Scott referred questions to
the Pentagon.
