Co-chair of the Smart Schools Initiative, Jonathan Weiss, states that the Kellogg Foundation provided the funding for the Initiative. He says the goal has been to serve as a catalyst in promoting better links between smart growth and public education advocates.

Weiss states that to make this happen, the Initiative brought up two founding partners, the Public Education Network and Smart Growth America, the two leading national organizations of their respected fields.(:33)
