U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, says that American kids need to catch up with the rest of the world in mathematics.
Spellings says that America faces a skills gap and emphasizes that a diploma must represent a ticket to success. Leading employers told Spellings that mathematics skills are essential for the workplace. At the same time these employers lamented the level of mathematics in high school graduates, describing their level to Spellings as fair or poor. Spellings argued that this is why the President has proposed a $120 million initiative to improve mathematics skills. (1:40)
