Senator Edward Kennedy’s Comments to Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz at the Senate Armed Forces Committee Hearing.
In a rather hostile manner, Senator Kennedy asked the deputy secretary numerous times why the Iraqi troops are not taking responsibility for their own country. The Senator stated that the lack of military experience cannot be a viable excuse for Iraqi security forces not to get into combat because the US also has inexperienced military personnel fighting this war on terror. The senator pointed out that Iraqi soldiers should be ready and willing to shed their own blood for the freedom of their country. In addition, Senator Kennedy draws the analogy that we should not have to wait for the Iraqi government to be functioning effectively because "many people don’t think that governmental agencies are functioning effectively here in this country."
