Compassion Related Items in the Federal Budget: Jim Towney, director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, spoke of five of the President’s social service programs as outlined in 2006 federal budget.
According to Jim Towney, President Bush has requested a total of 385 million dollars for the following five budget accounts: The Mentoring of Children of Prisoners, the Compassion Capital Fund, the Access to Recovery Drug Treatment Program, Prisoner Re-Entry and Maternity Group Homes. This represents a 150 million dollar increase over 2005 appropriated amounts for those programs. The new Gang Prevention Initiative, outlined during the President’s State of the Union Address, was also included in this request. Towney stated that these faith-based and community initiatives hold a lot of promise in addressing the problems of at-risk youth, prisoners re-entering society, and children in need of mentoring.
