President’s Schedule
The President had his usual briefings this morning including a National Security Council briefing regarding Afghanistan. At 12:00PM the President will hold a lunch for newly elected House Democrats and Republicans in the State Room. Later this afternoon, the President will have policy time. President Bush has no public events scheduled for today.
Cabinet Resignation
Press Secretary Scott McClellan announced that there have not been any
confirmed resignations today. McClellan expects to announce four resignations sometime this morning, potentially before the 12:30PM press briefing. The White House will make resignation announcements once the letters have been received.
Replacements for Staff Resignations
No replacements have been named for those who have resigned. John Ashcroft will stay in his position until a successor is confirmed. McClellan expects that other Staff who resign will do the same. The President will work as quickly as possible to confirm replacements.
Democrats Criticize CIA Resignations
McClellan would not respond to Democrats who criticized the CIA for its
resignations this weekend. McClellan said that Deputy Director John
McLaughlin had been expected to resign for personal reasons. The Bush
Administration appreciates the hard work and dedication of the entire CIA staff to protect American citizens.
Intelligence Reform Bill
The President continually stresses the importance of a strong National
Intelligence Director. McClellan said that the Bush Administration remains in close contact with Congress regarding this issue. They hope that Congress can move forward with intelligence reform.
